What Is Search Intent on SEMrush?

3 December 2021 Blog Posts

SEMrush is an online platform that is used for keyword research and ranking data. The data that SEMrush offers includes:

  • Keyword positions/rank
  • Volume (of searches per month)
  • Traffic
  • URL

A new piece of data offered by SEMrush is called Search Intent. Search intent is the purpose of a user’s search. Searches can be:

  • Navigational
  • Informational
  • Transactional, or
  • Commercial.

Navigational searches are when a user wants to find a specific page. For example, searching for “Megantic” instead of visiting megantic.com.au.

Informational searches are when a user wants to answer a question. It will usually include question words, such as “how to” or “what is”. For example, “why is SEO important?”.

Transactional searches are when a user wants to do something specific. For example, buying a product or contacting an organic search agency

Commercial searches are used when a user wants to learn more about a product or service, possibly to purchase in the future.

Where can you find search intent in SEMrush?

It’s super simple! Look at the intent column in any keyword-related report.

  • N signifies navigational intent
  • I is for informational intent
  • T stands for transactional intent, and
  • C is for commercial intent.

Why is search intent important?

Many times Googlers won’t search for exactly what they want. They may, for example, search for “donuts”. By searching for this broad term, they may be looking for a variety of things:

  • What is a donut
  • Where they can buy a donut
  • A donut recipe
  • Is the correct spelling “donut” or “doughnut”
  • A picture of a donut to use as a reference when drawing,
  • And many more reasons.

Search intent in SEMrush is important because it demystifies what potential customers are looking for when searching. This means it can help website owners to better understand their audience and to rank higher in search results.

Seeing search intent allows website creators to write content on their website that matches what their audience wants to find.

The average search intent for the keyword “donuts” is commercial, meaning that users want to learn more about donuts before purchasing one.

What are the benefits of targeting search intent when doing SEO?

There are many benefits to targeting search intent on your website. Some of these include:

  • Reduced bounce rates as users find what they are looking for on your website,
  • Increased page views, and
  • Being shown more often in featured snippets and answer boxes.
